Stirling Castle is a Scheduled Monument with many Category A Listed structures. This project fully renovated and extended a 19th century cart shed within the castle to provide a welcoming visitor reception and assist wayfinding. The interior gives information about the Castle and provides retail space.
The sensitive historical context influenced the concept and detail of the architectural approach. The extension deployed traditional stone, oak and lead in a contemporary manner, complementing the repair and conservation of the same materials in the renovated cart shed. The large openings of the cart shed were glazed for ticket sales. Insulation was enhanced and new services were provided.
The result is a successful blend of contemporary and historic forms. The new visitor reception adds another layer to the evolving story of Stirling Castle with the incorporation of the best of contemporary design within the ancient setting.
