This group of buildings are Category B-Listed, nationally significant, former WW1 Naval Barracks, currently on the Buildings at Risk Register. The project will create a new unique mixed-use community on the edge of the existing settlement and achieve a meaningful re-use of the building’s embodied carbon.
The proposed affordable homes consist of a mixture of flats, single storey and two storey houses. Works also include conversion of the boiler house into a café, located adjacent to the existing marina, conversion of existing guardhouse into a serviced apartment, and creation of workspaces for local community groups.
New access routes and connections will be established including a path to the private beach. Some buildings to the middle of the site are to be demolished providing a central sheltered courtyard space.
Our team is currently applying our expertise of retrofit and conservation through application of PAS 2035 principles, managing retrofit risks and developing an informed retrofit strategy.
The conversion and retrofit of the brick barracks will protect this historically significant site, achieve a meaningful re-use of the buildings embodied carbon and create a new unique place.
