Galvanizers Association GAGA Awards (Shortlisted)
The historic Callendar-Hamilton hangars form part of the former First and Second World War airfield at East Fortune, which is a Scheduled Monument. The National Museum of Flight required restoration and improvement works to the hangers, allowing these structures to better preserve the national aviation collections, and enhancing the internal environments to display supporting objects.
To improve the hangers’ ability to house the museum collections, we designed measures to the building fabric and services that improved the internal conditions, such as insulation and a ground source heat pump installation. These interventions were undertaken in tandem with sensitive works to the existing structures which included restoration of the metal cladding and replacement of the concrete floor slabs.
Following restoration works the hangers were populated with exhibitions showcasing the Military Aviation Collection, and the Leisure and Pleasure Aircraft Collection. The improvements enhance the visitor experience to this key cultural attraction, and help museum staff drive greater engagement with the subject they are passionate about.
