The popularity of Edinburgh as a destination for students is reflected by high levels of demand for dedicated accommodation. With great proximity to public transport and local amenities, this former industrial site provided the developer with an opportunity to provide independent student living in an attractive urban setting adjacent to Leith Walk.
We organised the design around a south facing courtyard which provides outdoor space for residents, a recycling hub, and access to cycle parking. The five and six storey buildings contain a social hub alongside a total of 276 bedrooms, the majority of which have balconies. Larger studios, intended for post-graduates or visiting lecturers, are provided on the top floor and benefit from roof terraces and great views to the city.
The buildings are located next to a densely planted disused railway which supports wildlife movement across the city. To respond to this, sedum roofs have been fitted to aid biodiversity in the area.
The site was developed by others following the design and planning stage.
