Scottish Home Awards 2020 – Affordable Housing Development of the Year (Private Sale) (Finalist), Housing Regeneration Project of the Year (Finalist)
This residential development involved working within a masterplan prepared for the Wauchope neighbourhood, forming some of the most prominent buildings facing onto Niddrie Mains Road. The site was to include a mixture of affordable and private housing, with a variety of differently sized homes. These included houses, flats and townhouses.
Our innovative approach to site design achieved the maximum number of houses on the site, while creating a variety of building forms, including terraces and new streets to create a distinctive and attractive place to live. The design enabled our client to increase the number of family houses in lieu of smaller flats, without a reduction in overall number of new homes provided.
Houses to the ends of terraces have been designed with the entrance on the gable, to overlook the streets and create a sense of security. We designed open plan house layouts which provide efficient and flexible accommodation to facilitate modern family living, and client feedback has confirmed that these homes are extremely popular with residents.
The development actively responds to the Scottish Government Designing Streets planning guidance. This is reflected in the design of the site layout, with enhanced connections through the site, shared surfaces, reduced forward visibility for vehicles to enhance pedestrian safety, and incorporation of soft landscaping in the public realm, all designed by our team.
Our design has created a prominent area of housing which addresses a significant city thoroughfare, assisting in the changing perception of Craigmillar while providing very desirable homes within a community environment.
