To support a growing student population through provision of dedicated accommodation, Smith Scott Mullan were asked by Dundee Student Villages to prepare designs for the construction of over 1000 new student bedrooms across four sites in the heart of Dundee.
Two of the sites are within the campus towards the northern edge between old Hawkhill and the new Hawkhill bypass. These sites are urban in nature and the proposal reflects this location by proposing two distinct collegiate style quadrangles of residences.
A third site is located on the seafront with spectacular views over the Tay where the design exploits these views by creating a wall of accommodation facing the water.
The fourth site is suburban and located within the conservation area to the west end of the city in the grounds of a Category B Listed Victorian villa surrounded by mature woodlands. The proposals for this site also included the provision of additional conference facilities attached to the listed building.
Taken together, this collection of student accommodation buildings helps to strengthen the campus experience for students and contributes to a vibrant educational and social centre for Dundee.
